ASSESSMENT

National Nonprofit Client:
National Alliance for Public Charter Schools

Level of Engagement

ISSUES

In mid-2012, the National Alliance of Public Charter
Schools (NAPCS) hired a new President & CEO. Following the
new hire, the organization sought an independent operational
assessment of its financial management, human resource,
information technology and facilities systems to identify risks
and opportunities for improvement.

STRATEGIC SOLUTION

  • Interviewed key stakeholders including; current and former staff, consultants and key vendors, to collect feedback on business systems and processes.
  • Reviewed organizational documents and systems including; governing and legal documents, policies and procedures, financial reports and information technology infrastructure to produce a detailed organizational assessment.
  • Worked with CEO to review assessment and identify priorities for the organization to implement.
  • CEO hired a full-time operations employee to address findings and priorities identified in the assessment report.

STRATEGIC PLANNING
& BOARD DEVELOPMENT

Local Nonprofit Client:
Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy

LEVEL OF ENGAGEMENT

ISSUES

The Academy had been operating for three years with
a Board of Directors and no full time employees. The organization
hired its first Executive Director in April 2013, followed by a Program
Manager in July 2013. The Board and its staff needed to collaborate
to define organizational priorities, strategic direction and division of
labor between staff and Board Committees.

STRATEGIC SOLUTION

  • Facilitated a strategic planning workshop to develop clear organizational goals and priorities.
  • Assisted the organization in crafting its mission and vision and ensured that goals and priorities aligned accordingly.
  • Conducted an organizational SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis to inform the Board and staff in the process of determining the strategic direction of the Academy.
  • Drafted the organizational strategic plan and Board Subcommittee work plans to assist the organization in monitoring its progress toward established goals.

programs. The merger with AARP also required Experience Corps to
change and improve many of its existing business processes and
systems, particularly in its finance and operations office.

STRATEGIC SOLUTION

  • Served on a cross-functional strategic planning team tasked with developing a 5-year growth plan with high-level, detailed analyses of different financial scenarios.

We’ve been there. We understand.

Every day, you face a new set of challenges, from the constant needs of service delivery to the rigorous demands of strategic partnerships and board stewardship. We know that you need to manage competing claims on your time and resources from a variety of diverse and often contradictory stakeholders, and we know that your organization is only as effective as its people and budget allow it to be.

That’s why we specialize in helping nonprofit organizations build the strategies, systems and structure for a sustainable, cost-effective impact, helping you manage your bottom-line so that your organization can focus on achieving its outcomes.

N Street Strategies was founded on three key principles, learned through a decade of nonprofit leadership that stretches from Sub-Saharan Africa to Washington, DC:

  • Executives are (and should be) focused on an organization’s external market: fundraising, Board development, partnerships and impact.

  • An organization’s internal systems – finances, human resources and program management – are no less important. Effective systems allow you to stretch donor dollars further, plan for the future, and sustain your impact.

  • Crucial to the development of these systems are experience and familiarity with all aspects of organizational management, from the grassroots to the boardroom, a resource often missing on the under-resourced and overstretched staff of nonprofit organizations.

Good intentions are not enough. Today’s world demands that organizations implement their programs as professionally and responsibly as their best-resourced peers.

N Street Strategies offers affordable consulting support in the most critical areas of nonprofit management so that you can effectively and sustainably reach your goals.
