It takes its name from an area in Washington that in the 1970s and 1980s was the epicenter of a new, passionate social movement. A community of diverse individuals – religious leaders, activists, students and more – united for the common good, using their collective strength to address many of the city’s most pressing problems: poverty, homelessness, hunger and disease. With creative tactics and a profound sense of mission, these individuals worked tirelessly to serve others and to make their city stronger.
