National Nonprofit Client:
National Alliance for Public Charter Schools

Level of Engagement

 

ISSUES

In mid-2012, the National Alliance of Public Charter
Schools (NAPCS) hired a new President & CEO. Following the
new hire, the organization sought an independent operational
assessment of its financial management, human resource,
information technology and facilities systems to identify risks
and opportunities for improvement.


STRATEGIC SOLUTION

  • Interviewed key stakeholders including; current and former staff, consultants and key vendors, to collect feedback on business systems and processes.
  • Reviewed organizational documents and systems including; governing and legal documents, policies and procedures, financial reports and information technology infrastructure to produce a detailed organizational assessment.
  • Worked with CEO to review assessment and identify priorities for the organization to implement.
  • CEO hired a full-time operations employee to address findings and priorities identified in the assessment report.
 

STRATEGIC PLANNING
& BOARD DEVELOPMENT

Local Nonprofit Client:
Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy

LEVEL OF ENGAGEMENT

 

ISSUES

The Academy had been operating for three years with
a Board of Directors and no full time employees. The organization
hired its first Executive Director in April 2013, followed by a Program
Manager in July 2013. The Board and its staff needed to collaborate
to define organizational priorities, strategic direction and division of
labor between staff and Board Committees.


STRATEGIC SOLUTION

  • Facilitated a strategic planning workshop to develop clear organizational goals and priorities.
  • Assisted the organization in crafting its mission and vision and ensured that goals and priorities aligned accordingly.
  • Conducted an organizational SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis to inform the Board and staff in the process of determining the strategic direction of the Academy.
  • Drafted the organizational strategic plan and Board Subcommittee work plans to assist the organization in monitoring its progress toward established goals.

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

National Nonprofit Client:
AARP EXPERIENCED CORPS

LEVEL OF ENGAGEMENT

 

ISSUES

In 2012, Experience Corps, which engages adults 50 and
over to serve underprivileged children, merged with AARP, one of the
largest membership organizations in the United States. This merger
included a strategic goal of significantly extending Experience Corps’
programs. The merger with AARP also required Experience Corps to
change and improve many of its existing business processes and
systems, particularly in its finance and operations office.


STRATEGIC SOLUTION

  • Served on a cross-functional strategic planning team tasked with developing a 5-year growth plan with high-level, detailed analyses of different financial scenarios.
  • Redeveloped the organization’s chart of accounts to reflect the client’s new programmatic and business models and allow consolidation with AARP’s accounting system.
  • Implemented and managed a new online planning system to assist with budgeting, forecasting and scenario analysis.

ISSUES

N Street Strategies’ Founder & CEO, Tim Guinan, served as PPI’s Deputy Executive Director & COO for several years. During his time with PPI, Tim had professionalized and streamlined business systems and processes within the organization. Based on organizational needs, Tim recommended that PPI transition this role to a part-time operations consultant to reduce organizational costs.

STRATEGIC SOLUTION

• Provided ongoing operational guidance and support to the PPI executive team and Board, allowing them to focus on board development, fundraising and program management.
• Developed innovative executive evaluation dashboards and performance management templates to monitor organizational and employee impact.
• Managed multiple United States Government grants, including adhering to stringent reporting and audit requirements.
